Honestly.....

I like it. I think the ooze is spot on. Thats the part I really like. the other is done ok but something is lacking IMHO. I cannot figure it out but its something.... maybe too much contrast?? maybe blend the fleshtone into the OSL a bit because I think its too harsh of a contrast.... Again only my opinion and can be discredited at any time...

I thought something was a bit off myself but couldn't figure it out. I think you're right about the OSL around the stitches. It seems too harsh. I'll try to blend it in a bit and see what happens. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

Hummm. Lets look at stitching....

and now to yours

Whats different??? The sutures. yours are glowing. I think the sutures need to be a dark color, and your OSL needs to be more subtle. More like the "wounds I linked. I think if you do it like that it would look loads better. but OSL is going to be hard like that and with purple expect it to be confused with bruising, which could be an easy way out of doing OSL....

I would say either paint the suture black and do bruising/tiny OSL, or leave the sutures glow and tone back the OSl with your fleshtone. This pic in particular is an example of what needs to be toned down. The "delta" triangle of flesh should be not covered by a glow from a wound sutured shut. It shold glow very little because its being bound together.

Snooping around on Google I found these.... Maybe they will help with what im describing
pic
another pic

EDIT, I linked the URL because they wont IMG link correct and I dont feel like mussing about with it.

I painted the stitches. Does that help? Haven't started in on the blending part yet. :/

Yes... Yes indeed.... now if you tone down the rest and bring back your flesh tone to all but the "cuts" and immediate surrounding area It will look much better. Do you agree??

Also I hate to be the only one commenting..... someone else speak up and give input!!

Alrighty, I haven't read through your entire post so excuse me if I've missed something but here's how I think you could improve your osl effect...

In your paint job the darkest colour of the osl is significantly darker than the surface the light is shining on to... This looks weird and is unrealistic because you can’t have a light that is ‘shining darkness’ the light source must be lightening the existing colour and tinting it (which is what makes for really cool osl effects). Also you have simply done a blend from light in the recess to dark on the outside. It looks better if there is a separating seam between the light source and the light being reflected on to the surface...

I probably didn't explain that well so I've done a diagram to help... Apologies about the models used, many of them are older ones of mine so the paint job quality isn't too good... that being said they demonstrate what I'm trying to get across.

I think part of your problem is with the technique your using too... personally I recommend simply highlighting your area up to a bright white and then go in and glaze over with your colour... it generally looks more realistic. It's harder to pull of the effect by layering opaque colour over the area like you have done because it doesn't allow any of the base colour to show through like light realistically would.

Hope this helps, sorry if I appear negative, just trying to help, I applaud you for being so adventurous!!! look forward to seeing what you do with it!!!

Oh and I'll stick a pic of one of my most recent paint jobs here... the goal of this piece was to do as much osl effects as possible... unfortunately most was done with an airbrush (accept the stuff on the base coming from the lamp) so the tutorial video I did won't help you... I just wanted to show an example of how I personally use the theory I've put forward to you!

The osl on the base and the damaged pole thing was achieved by first using glazes of white to go over the area and then yellow to give it the colour... You could never achieve this sort of realism (with the texture of the paint damage showing through etc) by using thicker applications of paint.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I decided to not fix this however. It would've taken too long and as I work all the time. I couldn't really find the time to fix it.

Finished pics! Challenge completed!
